Workshop: Integrating Vehicle Automation into Existing Traffic Management

November 4, 2025 at 1:30 PM-5:00 PM MT

Details:

Over the past year, we have seen progress in vehicle automation being deployed in real-world environments. Implementation of automated ride services (“robotaxis”), shuttle and microtransit applications, small-scale freight delivery, parking garages and truck operations are underway.

The common thread is that all of this is happening within the framework of normal urban, suburban and interstate traffic operations, along with dedicated facilities where needed and appropriate. There are two sides to how this works. One is how transportation agencies adjust their systems to address automated vehicle operations and characteristics. The other is how vehicles incorporate information from the transportation network (in particular, downstream information that a vehicle cannot see, including work zones, incidents and special events, as well as route alternatives).

Where we are, and where we are going, will be the subject of our stimulating discussions – possibly leading to new ideas, opportunities, and research topics that can be generated from this session.
