Head of Perception
I lead the perception team which works on a wide range of problems pertaining to detection, tracking and classification using a combination of LiDAR, radar and cameras given Plus.ai’s multimodal sensor fusion approach.
As an engineer, I really enjoy the intellectual stimulation of my role. We use deep learning together with geometric computer vision to develop our perception systems, so I am working on a daily basis at the cutting edge of autonomous vehicles. We intentionally built our engineering team to be very flat which means everyone gets to jump in and contribute from day one to help tackle hard engineering problems. It’s fun to mentor and work with my team to solve new challenges we encounter.
I conduct research and development in deep learning and sensor fusion to push the boundaries of how our vehicles perceive the world around them.
My PhD at Carnegie Mellon was in Physics, so sometimes I get asked, how did that lead you to Plus.ai and working in autonomous trucking? My thesis was actually about deep learning applications in cosmology, so combining that with my love for adventure and tackling hard problems, I jumped at the opportunity to come back and work full time here after my internship.
As a Research Scientist, I experiment with cutting-edge deep learning methods for object detection and tracking. I’m also investigating different ways multi-sensors fusion can further improve overall perception performance.
Autonomous driving is the future, so I’m really excited to have the opportunity to help shape its development.
Working with our global engineering team, I help develop perception algorithms to detect and identify objects for our autonomous driving system.
I’m really excited about launching my professional career at Plus.ai. I studied autonomous systems as part of my graduate degree at Stanford; so I was specifically looking to work for a startup in autonomous vehicles. Every day is challenging and fun because I’m working with a team that’s passionate and dedicated to making autonomous trucks a commercial reality.
As part of the Perception team, I’ve been able to work on a number of projects where I’ve gotten more exposure in areas such as neural networks and deep learning models. The team’s pretty close knit so in addition to what I’m working on, I get to learn about what others are doing. This is definitely a great place to be for curious minds.
With 20+ years of experience as a Class A driver and owner/operator, I work closely with our Vehicle Operations Specialists and engineers to help ensure the safest driving operations of our fleet of autonomous trucks.
As a Bay area native, I grew up around technology and am fascinated with how technology can improve our lives. I also started a family recently, so joining Plus.ai gave me the best of both worlds – I don’t have to be on the road days on end and miss precious time with my daughter, and I get to use my trucking skills and experience for a fast-growing tech company.
I collaborate with our Vehicles Operations Specialists to test our trucks on both private test facilities and public roads, and with our engineers to execute branch tests and field experiments. I also support our pilot freight runs for top shippers, which we are able to complete almost fully in autonomous mode.
We are looking for talented individuals who have a keen interest in tackling extremely challenging technical problems, in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, and mission-critical systems.
