First hub-to-hub autonomous truck tested in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, May 24 (Xinhua) — The first production test of self-driving logistics heavy trucks was conducted at a distribution center in Fengxian, Shanghai on May 24th.

This self-driving heavy truck is named “Xing Long No.1,” jointly launched by Suning Logistics and PlusAI. With a loading capacity of 40 tons, this truck can autonomously plan, steer, and follow driving routes, avoid obstacles, and accurately park for loading and unloading.

Luan Xuefeng, associate dean of the Suning Logistics Research Institute, said most applications for logistics heavy trucks take place on fixed routes, a relatively simpler scenario compared with that of passenger vehicles. With regards to its technological development, self-driving has a greater potential in logistics operations. Daimler, Tesla and several other global automobile manufacturers are developing their own self-driving trucks.


Armed with cameras, LIDAR and other sensors, “Xing Long No.1” adopts the most advanced artificial intelligence and deep learning technology. On highways, “Xing Long No.1” can accurately detect obstacles at a distance up to 300 meters and take emergency actions such as braking or obstacle avoidance at a speed of 25 m/s.

Today, autonomous driving systems can be applied to various types of heavy trucks at a reasonable cost. According to Luan XueFeng, once the trucks satisfy basic requirements such as electric steering and AMT, they can be converted into self-driving vehicles at costs that won’t exceed ten thousand dollars.

Current regulations in China prohibit autonomous vehicles from driving on public roads. Autonomous logistics heavy-truck can only conduct tests at enclosed logistics parks and test facilities.
